Fruit from the Area.
From the foot of Grand Mesa, largest flattop mountain in the world,
comes some of the best fruit in the world. The first fruit trees in the Surface Creek Valley were planted in 1882 in the
Cory area. Over the next twelve years more and more settlers moved into the area. As the trees started bearing fruit, growers
discovered the fruit had a better flavor than they had ever tasted before. Was it the soil or the climate that made better-flavored
fruit? Most believe it was the climate. It was not long before land was being purchased in the upper Surface Creek
Valley around the Bar-I Ranch. In 1895 Henry Stolte and J. H. Wetterich set out the first commercial apple orchards
north of Cedaredge. Fruit growers from the Surface Creek Valley have won many awards sense the 1893 World's Fair in
Chicago. By the 1920's, Delta County was considered the Apple Capitol of the world. The fruit industry has had
a hard
time over the last one hundred yeas but the quality and the flavor will always be there. Stop buy one of the Fruit
stands in the area and sample the Apples, Cherries, Peaches or Pears or what ever is in season. And see for yourself
how great the flavor is.
